Some excellent work from the London-based designer, specializing in book covers. This one caught my eye a few weeks ago, and after contacting him I was able to get some of his latest to share (see below).
He’s been designing since 1998; first at Bloomsbury Publishing, later at Penguin, and currently freelances out of a shared studio with a ping pong table in North London. Sounds good to me! Check out his site for more.

스위스 취리히의 그래픽 디자인 스튜디오 노름(Norm)은 1999년 디미트리 브루니(Dimitri Bruni)와 마누엘 크렙스(Manuel Krebs)가 설립하여, 주로 도서 디자인과 활자체 디자인에 초점을 두고 활동해 왔다. 활자 디자인과 그래픽 디자인에 대한 연구 작업 과정에서 출판한 책으로서 (Norm: Introduction, 2000), (Norm: The Things, 2002), (Bruce Lee, 2005), (Replica, 2009) 등이 있다. 활자 디자인 작업으로 쾰른 공항 표지판에 쓰인 '심플(Simple)', 스위스 시계 제조업체 오메가(Omega)의 전용 활자체, 최근 발표한 본문용 활자체 '레플리카(Replica)' 등이 있다. 피터 피슐리·다비트 바이스, 사이먼 스탈링, 크리스천 마클리, 아트 앤드 랭귀지 등 현대 미술가, 사나(Sanaa), 데코스테르·람 등 건축가, 런던 테이트 모던 미술관, 파리 루브르 박물관, 취리히 디자인 박물관 등 예술 기관과 협업을 벌이기도 했다.
노름의 작업은 수학적이고 생성적인 시스템 개발과 그에 대한 몰입을 특징으로 한다. 그들은 형태를 구성하는 논리와 구조, 질서를 부여하는 규칙을 극단까지 추구하여, 결국에는 체계와 질서에 대한 자기 비판 경향마저 드러낸다. 그들이 흔히 활용하는 체계는 비가시적 질서 틀로만 기능하는 것이 아니라, 흔히 가시적 표면으로 드러나 뚜렷한 조형 요소를 이루기도 한다. 그들은 질서의 가치와 그것을 규정해 주는 규칙을 믿지만, 동시에 그 한계와 잠재적 자가당착성을 의식한다. 이처럼 멜랑콜리하고 때로는 자기 모순적인 체계성을 품는다는 점에서 노름의 작업은 선배 스위스 현대주의 그래픽 디자이너 작업과 구별된다.
이번 서울시립대학교 강연회에서 노름의 디미트리 브루니와 마누엘 크렙스는 활자체, 도서, 화폐에 걸친 주요 작업을 설명하고, 그래픽 디자인의 기능에 대한 시각을 밝힌다.
